Monroe Welcomes New Touchscreen Recognition Platform
For over a decade, Monroe High School has had an athletics Hall of Fame installed. Plaques have been hung up across the wall to highlight those who had exceptional high school athletic careers.
However, Monroe’s method of celebrating accomplishments is about to undergo a significant transformation.
Since July, Dr. Chet Hesson, Director of Athletics for Monroe Public Schools, has been working with Rocket Alumni Solutions, a company that specializes in interactive recognition, to create a touchscreen that will highlight the athletic Hall of Fame, along with awards from all sectors of the community.
The goal behind the shift was to be able to use different types of multimedia to go into more detail about the awards and showcase a broader array of them.
“The video display, the concept initially was Hall of Fame driven, of how do we recognize the folks that had incredible athletic accomplishments during their time here and have them be represented by more than just a small little plaque on the wall? So how do we curate content that, in some instances, might be able to have video or a number of images and write ups or links to news articles in the local newspaper…” said Hesson. “We can put historical artifacts and yearbooks and other types of press releases to recognize alumni that maybe did stuff in academics or had incredible careers in any walk of life. So just the ability to bring in other avenues of recognition for the community, I felt like, was the way to go”.
Although the touchscreen and software are still being updated with information, their impact is already visible. Hesson has engaged three students to assist with building the content on the back end to ensure that the Hall of Fame portion is ready for Monroe's induction ceremony on December 7.
The touchscreen recognition platform will first be placed in Monroe High School, but Hesson hopes it will be featured across the 13 schools in the district.
“The fact that it's a software solution and not just a hardware solution was really attractive to me, because then we can put up different displays and any number of those 13 buildings between elementary schools and admin buildings and athletic facilities, to the point where anyone can access this content physically in those spaces, but also digitally on our website,” said Hesson.
Hesson is focused on making sure everyone in the community will be celebrated once Monroe’s touchscreen is up and running.
“The recognition for alumni and people that are connected to Monroe, or previously, if you weren't a Hall of Fame student athlete, where did you go? The recognition that you had or what you've done after graduation kind of disappears. So recognizing boosters, recognizing distinguished alumni, a lot of the other types of events that we put on. We have robust band and theater programs. We have auto tech and a number of other vocational education programs that do really well. And it's a feature that we need to highlight more in this community,” said Hesson.
